We are nearing the end of the first volume of this series, and the action kicks into high gear. Kotov is deep in the critical cave system, both for the nuclear reactors he needs to detonate for the Armadillos, but also for who is hidden there. Just when things seem like they can’t get complicated enough for Kotov, Collingwood throws another wrench at him before the mission. Racing through Kotov’s mind is the success of the mission, the lives of his comrades and the offer of solace he must make to the royal family. As much as he tries to concentrate on the mission, it burns him up that he needs to also save the enemy.

Does this happen in real life soldier missions? I believe it does. Despite the death and destruction of war, behind the scenes deals are made and important people are shuttled out while the common man is slaughtered. No wonder Kotov is angry.
