Fifteen years before the upcoming novel The Demon on Stilts, the beggar Sardon encounters a small boy who demands he follow him into The Realm of Marvels to meet with the latest Baron Farrier. Sardon fears the consequences of not heeding the call and follows the insignificant Pit Mouse into the slum withinthe slums. In this encounter Sardon is forced to make use of the magic Despair, much to the satisfaction of Baron Farrier who longs to have him by his side.
Five years before the upcoming novel The Demon on Stilts, King Ardok II of House Gotharus is tried, convicted and executed by the nascent Just Republic. The news is met by cautious euphoria by the commoners, and rage by the nobles and The Church of the Whole. The stories of four men intertwine as they discuss how to rally the people to them and destroy the republic to reestablish the ruling House Gotharus.
