Today is a big day for Kotov. Despite being a hardened, professional soldier, he can barely find the courage to get out of ben. He has to meet with the generals that he calls the "butchers" and decide what he want to do. Participate in a mission that seems at best suicidal, at worst, genocidal? When he receives new intelligence about the Forefathers, he is swayed, but his doubts remain.
In this chapter the stress level is reaching its peak for Kotov. I wonder if this is how it would be for any man of action; the thick of a violent battle is atrocious, but psychologically, what of the decision to enter into battle and the time before? How many doubts can run through a man’s mind as he runs down scenarios of death and destruction? In Kotov’s case, with the mind crushing doubt that what he is about to commit to is wrong.
