Yesterday I met with the Tuscan cosplay group ‘Semplicemente Steampunk’ to present to them the printed version of the graphic novelette, Steampunk Blues Volume I: TenebroCity. I first met David and Maria in September at the Gothika event in Lucca. They were kind enough to take time out of their photo shoot to explain to me some technical aspects of the steampunk world which I incorporated in volume 1 and will be expanding upon in volume 2. I was stuck on the character development of antagonists and their insight helped me choose and develop The Scythe Coven, the most dangerous group challenging The Catalyst Four.
I had barely started development of the Steampunk Blues World when I ran into Semplicemente Steampunk; a chance encounter that can only be considered serendipity. I had gone to Gothika to research some occult aspects to use in my fantasy series ‘The Paramount’ when a large group of beautifully costumed people walked into the fairgrounds. I was with my nephew who understood who they were even though I hadn’t picked up on the steampunk aspect of their costumes until he told me. I’ll be honest, I barely even knew what steampunk was despite having read Verne and Wells!
I think what struck me most about the group Semplicemente Steampunk was passion in what they are doing, something I can understand as a musician and writer. Seeing a coordinated group of people full of distinct individuals doing something creative just for the love of it can’t help but bring a smile to my face.
