Dead Sara

It’s high time I write about the band Dead Sara.
The use of music while writing may not be the most obvious connection to make, but it is a surprisingly useful tool. Music can spark up your inspiration or power your way through tough spots in a story. I find that the way I listen to music while writing can subtly change how I tackle a part of the story. Play an album, loop a song, listen to it in the background, concentrate on a specific part for a few minutes and so on. I find that looping a song until I get seasick is the most effective method and the tactic I usually apply with Dead Sara.
The first song I ever heard from them was “Weatherman”. I don’t remember how I found out about them, but it was probably through a friend. I bought the CD and I was immediately captivated by “Whispers & Ashes”, which is still probably my favourite song on that album. Unfortunately, I kind of misplaced the CD along with a lot of others. I’m not exactly the most orderly person in the world.
I hadn’t listened to Dead Sara for ages until about a year and a half ago when I decided to reboot my writing passion that I had suspended for three decades to be a ‘grown up’. For some inexplicable reason, the moment I started writing, Dead Sara came straight to my mind. I couldn’t find the CD anywhere so I just looked them up online and I was pleased to discover they had gone one to make other albums. They aren’t easy to find in Italy, but I was able to purchase Aint It Tragic which had a massive impact on my writing. I’ll cover that in a later post.
The first novel I wrote (the temporarily suspended fantasy novel, The Demon On Stilts) was fueled by the “Weatherman” and “Something Good.” My second novel, Blood Interrogator, a work of dystopian literature, was helped through the hard parts by the song “Anybody.” The novel I’m currently writing, an urban fantasy entitled Null City, was literally inspired by the song “Starry Eyed”.
In the following posts I’ll provide more information about why I find this band is so helpful and inspirational for writing.
