I can’t say I held strictly to the letter in this assignment. I predominantly used hearing, smell, taste and touch, but I slipped in a little bit of sight. But the exercise did remind me of what I constantly forget, and that is to incorporate as many senses as possible when writing. It really does make the description richer.
Then there is the story itself. When I sat down to write this one page piece of flash fiction, I had no idea what I would write about. Normally I’m a plotter, but I’ve been working hard on just sitting down to write. The idea came to me with the ruffling of feathers, which became the sound of falling pages, which became pages thrown across the room. And from there the story came into being. I will be publishing The Parking Lot on my website within a couple of weeks.
And back to the four senses. I have immediately applied the technique to the urban fantasy I’m writing. I went back to the opening chapters and filled in some descriptions with smell and sound. What I do find considerably more difficult is incorporating taste and touch. It seems like I have to force them in, which might say more about me than my actual writing.
Later this week I’ll let you know how the assignment went!
