It’s been a while since I’ve used music when writing, but over the past few days I’ve been looping songs while crafting flash fiction, and listening to songs before writing long stories. For me it’s always Dead Sara. I still don’t know why that band has had such a massive impact on my writing, but it has. I’ve tried other bands I loved, but it’s only Dead Sara’s music that helps me get into the writing zone.
Music and words are a fine pairing. Lyrics in songs are often short bits of poetry or even very short stories. Music often plays a critical part in stories, even if you can’t hear it while you read the choice of music by a writer can still help evoke a specific atmosphere if applied correctly. It’s the application of music to a story that can be tricky, so I’m about to start a series of flash fiction written to specific songs.
Stay tuned!
