Burnt Toast

It’s amazing how beneficial it can be to ruin your breakfast. Burnt Toast was actually written after I had burnt some bread because I was… I’m not sure what I was doing, probably sleeping on my feet. After my initial annoyance, I got breakfast back underway with fresh bread and hot espresso and then I got to writing. I had no plan, I just started tapping on the keyboard and the first paragraph was done. A frowned upon scene (no diners or cafes, they say), but one that led me from a science journalist to a professor of physics to panpsychism. If I had tried to plan it out, I’m sure it never would have worked.
I should be clear that this was not inspiration. Though I do admit that at times I do feel inspired and I can write a boatload of words under inspiration, I truly believe that hard work is the key for my writing. I put my butt to the chair, I write, I let it sit, I revise, I publish. Well, I do publish my flash fiction. Most of my longer works (from short stories to full novels) are piling up. I’m going to have to figure out what to do about that.
