Tomorrow I’ll publish the third piece of Dead Sara inspired flash fiction. It was written with ‘We Are What You Say’ looping in the background. It’s from their first album which I heard way back in…I’m not sure when it was. All I can say is that they only had one album out when I heard their self-titled release, so somewhere between 2012 and 2014.

What’s crazy is that for years I hadn’t listened to the album, or even remembered that I had it. When I started writing fiction again after a thirty-year hiatus, the band popped into my head. I’m fuzzy on the exact song, but I think it was ‘Whispers & Ashes’. It’s still one of my favourite songs. I love the bass intro.

Years later they have three albums and an EP. When I wrote my first book, I used their songs anytime I suffered writer’s block. Nowadays I use their songs differently. Every so often I’ll play a specific song to help me get into a mood conducive to a particular style of story I’m to create.

The power of music! To some degree the impact of music on a person can be explained technically, but when it comes to a specific song or group, that’s a secret that the universe keeps to itself.
